The majority are passionate about travels. They broaden our horizon and enrich our lives in ways untold. The series of Around the World in Watercolor was produced with the combination of our distinctively different styles. For Janet, her response is immediate. She captures the moment with lightning speed whenever she is awed. That is how she preserves her memories. For me, I like to take time to savor the essence of a place. After I gather the 'information', I would recreate the scene with subtle nuances upon return to the studio. When we are not sketching or painting, we simply wander and wonder…

Through the Eyes of the Third Daughter: China
In 1937, as Japanese forces occupied their country, Janet Chun's prominent family fled their comfortable home in Guangzhou for Hong Kong, taking only a trusted servant and what they could carry. Though they returned home after the Allied victory, Janet and her family had to flee once again, when Communism took over China in 1949. Almost 50 years later, Janet, now an American citizen, returned with her husband Douglas, touring both once-known and unfamiliar territories. Colorful details of people, places, and things in fast-changing modern (and not-so-modern) China come alive through Janet's pen and ink drawings. They add a unique dimension to intimate observations of the journey and heartfelt recollections of her childhood. While bicycles, the Yangtze River, kites, snake restaurants, temples and tombs elicit evocative images, a poignant thread runs throughout the narrative as chance encounters reveal the on-going struggles and sacrifices of women in the Chinese culture. |
Around the World in Watercolor: Italy
Douglas and Janet Chun have been ardent travelers in their lives. During the last 25 years, they have commemorated their trips with dairies that reflect their personalities and interests. This journal marks their first collaboration, seamlessly inter-weaving their different styles. Janet, the more spontaneous of the two draws her pen-and-ink sketches on the spot, sometimes applying color simultaneously to create vignettes that complement her text. Douglas is the more contemplative, absorbing the scene he will later paint in the studio as a formal, interpretive watercolor. Begun as personal impressions and remembrances, these journals elicited so much admiration from friends that the Chuns were encouraged to publish them. They share their love for distant lands in the hopes that it will kindle (or rekindle) your own. |
